Meet Bro. Lucien J. Metellus, Jr

A man of Haitian descent, Bro. Lucien J. Metellus, Jr was born in Brooklyn, New York, where he attended Holy Cross School. At the age of 14, the family moved to Queens, NY and in the area of Rochdale Village. There he attended the now-closed Springfield Garden’s High School. His education continued at Syracuse University, where he secured a degree in Policy Studies.

Bro. Metellus entered the House of Alpha at Zeta Zeta Lambda Chapter, which is seated in St. Albans, NY. Since that time, he has served as a chapter President, Vice President, Secretary, Director of Educational Activities, Associate Editor to the Sphinx and as a fundraising chair. He has served as chapter advisor for the college chapter Theta Epsilon seated at St. Johns University. He is also a Life member.

Service at the District level includes tenures as Parliamentarian, Secretary, Director of Competitions, NY State Director of Conferences, NY City Area Director, NY State President and District Director.

Throughout his time in Alpha, Bro. Metellus has been active and has been in service to the fraternity’s Eastern Region as March for Babies Coordinator, Parliamentarian and as Director of College Brothers Affairs. He also served as Parliamentarian for the General Organization and became a voting Board of Director’s member with his election as the 28th Eastern Regional Vice President.

Due to varied leadership roles in Alpha Phi Alpha, Bro. Metellus has been accorded opportunities to hold high the name of the fraternity in external leadership positions, as well. Among those, he also sat as the chair of Founders’ Day, Membership, Board Member, Parliamentarian, Vice-President & President for the Pan Hellenic Council of Greater New York, within the city chapter of NPHC. The Pan Hellenic Council encompasses the 9 primary historically black fraternities and sororities in the New York City Area, that serves collectively 50 different alumni, alumnae & graduate chapters.

Professionally, he has worked in the information technology field for 20 years, currently employed at Centrilogic as a Project Manager & Senior Business Analyst, he works on providing solutions for clients and customers. In his career, he has managed projects that provided millions of dollars of savings to businesses through utilization of technology. He has over 10 professional certifications and degrees in leadership, project management, religion and technology.

In keeping with the fraternal traditions of “Servants of All,” Bro. Metellus has provided assistance to Shelter our Sisters, a Domestic Violence shelter in New Jersey; Youth Partnership of Bergen County; has been a Boy Scout Troop Leader; and also worked with the March of Dimes and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America.

Additionally, he is a published poet & writer. At present, he serves as chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, appointed by the mayor, in Frederick, MD., teaches the Word to young adults in the area of Christian Education at his church, and has served as a minister in various churches.

The Alpha man is also a family man, who is happily married to Esther Slack-Metellus & they share a son, Jeremiah & a daughter, Janae.

FRATERNAL EXPERIENCE & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Initiated through Zeta Zeta Lambda Chapter April 25th, 1998
  • Life Member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated (#10386)

EASTERN REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT, ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATENRITY – 2017-2021

    • Executed and project managed 3 general organization system installments including membership (AlphaMX), community engagement (AlphaElite) and learning management (Alpha University) systems.
    • Worked with staff of over 80 members to execute strategy of the General Organization and General President
    • 4 years with no appeals of sanctions administered at the General Organization level
    • Mandated Ritual Training for the Eastern Region which translated to better member experiences
    • No lawsuits against the fraternity during service related to hazing or events.
    • Executed virtual meetings in a COVID Environment
    • Grew the region to nearly 5000 active members by the end of term (largest in history of the region) and in 2019 had the largest amount of college brothers over the past 30 years.

GENERAL ORGANIZATION PARLIAMENTARIAN – 2013 -2016

    • Chairman of the Membership Document and Policies Committee and executed an updated policy and procedures manual of the membership
    • Developed the first Board of Directors Policy Manual

DISTRICT III DIRECTOR (NEW YORK) – 2011 – 2015

    • Over 90% compliance of chapters in New York for 3 out of 4 years
    • Manage Initial Membership Development process under the guidelines set by the standing orders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated
    • Worked with the Regional Vice President to realign areas in New York to assist with strategic growth

EASTERN REGION DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE BROTHERS AFFAIRS – 2009 – 2011

    • Coordinate the activities and advocate for the College Brothers and Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha in the Eastern Region
    • Assist the Assistant Regional Vice President with all college brothers’ activities and the college brothers’ retreat

EASTERN REGION MARCH OF BABIES CHAIR – 2002 – 2009

    • Eastern Region was the largest fundraiser amongst all the regions historically in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated nearly quadrupling funds raised since 2002
    • Eastern Region increased fund raising by 275% over the first 3 years

PRESIDENT – ZETA ZETA LAMBDA CHAPTER – 2005-2007

    • Developed standardized reporting in the chapter and followed the General Organization strategic plan as president.
    • Developed and had over 60 activities over 2 years 85% of which focused on one of the 3 national programs.
